Walmart Helping Local Farmers
Normally Walmart is demonized for squashing local industries. The giant conglomerate comes to rural towns, sets up shop providing all the townies' needs at prices far below what the shops downtown can compete with, and thereby drives these small local business out of business. Now, while there are still a number of problems with Walmart's practices, one thing they do seem to be doing right is there recent involvement in the organic food market.
As a part of Walmart Heritage Agriculture Program, the company has been working to reinvigorate small local agriculture markets that have been lost to large-scale corporate farming operations.
Why?
Well for one thing it taste better. Corby Kummer did a review comparing his produce purchases from Walmart and Whole Foods, and when it came to fresh fruits and vegetables Walmart actually came out on top based on a blind taste test with some of his foodie friends.
But, of course, Walmart is keeping true to its penny pinching nature. Because the farmers are local, Walmart actually makesup for in transportation costs what it spends in quality costs.
